We all know how important is is to give back to our communities, but in the bustle of everyday life it can be all too easy to forget about the less fortunate members of our communities. Unfortunately, that can be especially true around the holidays, when many people are busy with family obligations, holiday parties, and holiday shopping. But getting involved with charitable organizations during the holiday season is one of the best ways to honor the spirit of the holidays--and be rewarded with a more satisfying holiday experience. Here are a few suggestions to get you started in the right direction.
Buy Gifts for Others
It’s easy to get caught up in buying mountains of fancy gifts for family and close friends. But no matter where you live, there are many needy children who won’t receive any gifts at all unless they are donated. Your children do not need all the latest gadgets, and true friends do not expect lavish gifts--so consider making room in your gift-giving budget for organizations that facilitate the delivery of holiday gifts to needy kids.
Plan to take your own children with you and let them help you pick gifts for other kids, which will help teach them early on the true meaning of Christmas. After they help choose a gift, have children assist in dropping the items off and explain exactly what it is for.
Donate items
Instead of waiting for spring cleaning, why not go through your things and look for non-perishable foods, clothes, furniture, and other items you no longer want or need to donate to worthy organizations like the Salvation Army, Goodwill, homeless shelters, and other charitable groups? You can start even before Thanksgiving by donating canned foods and other non-perishables to your local soup kitchen or other charitable organizations that organize the delivery of Thanksgiving dinners to needy community members. Children can get involved by helping to identify toys and games they no longer use. If nothing else, tell them it will help to make room for the presents they will be getting on Christmas.
Volunteer your Services
Many people have good intentions for involvement, but aren’t sure how to start volunteering or are afraid that organizations will try to make them commit to more than they can give. While there is no greater need than during the winter season, charities will never ask more of your time than you can give. Just be honest about what you are willing to do, and your local organizations can help identify the best way to utilize your skills in a way that matches your availability.
How to get started? In addition to well-known charities, look to your local schools, PTA, community centers, or religious institutions. You can also go online and find volunteering opportunities via websites like Volunteer Match.
